A shallow-flats sight-fishing species found in Florida, the Caribbean, and beyond, bonefish are unusual among species on this list for actually favoring bright, clear conditions — that's what lets both fish and angler see each other on skinny water.
Best conditions
- Water temperature: 75–88°F is the sweet spot.
- Light: Comfortable feeding in bright sun.
- Wind: Prefers calm water — bites taper off quickly once wind picks up.
- Barometric pressure: Not very sensitive to pressure — feeding stays fairly steady regardless.
Techniques & tips
- Small crab or shrimp fly patterns, or light spin tackle with live shrimp, cast well ahead of a spotted fish.
- Fish bright, calm, sunny conditions — visibility on the flats matters more here than for almost any other species covered.
- Time it to the tide — bonefish push onto flats to feed as water floods in, then drain off as it falls.
- Avoid windy days if possible; chop makes spotting fish on shallow flats far harder.
