Best conditions
- Water temperature: 56–70°F is the sweet spot.
- Light: Flexible about light — active across a range of sky conditions.
- Wind: Tolerates wind and current better than most species.
- Barometric pressure: Not very sensitive to pressure — feeding stays fairly steady regardless.
Techniques & tips
- Bread, cheese paste, or meat fished tight to cover — undercut banks, overhanging branches, weir pools.
- Chub feed well in both bright and low light near cover, making them a reliable target when pickier species shut down.
- Work baits naturally through current rather than anchoring them still — chub respond to movement.
- Don't overlook chub in coloured, higher water — they tolerate disturbed conditions better than most river species.
Spawning behavior
Chub typically spawn in late spring into early summer over gravel in flowing water, once temperature settles into range. The spawn temperature window is roughly 60–68°F.
