One of the most sought-after inshore species in the UK and France, European sea bass are a current- and structure-oriented predator that — unlike most fish on this list — often fish better in rough, coloured water after a blow than in calm conditions.
Best conditions
- Water temperature: 58–72°F is the sweet spot.
- Light: Strongly prefers low light — dawn, dusk, overcast, or after dark.
- Wind: Tolerates wind and current better than most species.
- Barometric pressure: Moderately sensitive to pressure trends.
Techniques & tips
- Lures, live or fresh bait fished around rock marks, surf, estuary mouths, and current breaks.
- Fish dawn, dusk, or after dark for the most consistent action — bass are a strongly low-light-biased feeder.
- Don't wait out a blow — coloured, disturbed water after rough weather is often when bass feed hardest.
- Target moving water at the tide change rather than the dead slack in between.
Spawning behavior
