Best conditions
- Water temperature: 55–68°F is the sweet spot.
- Light: Comfortable feeding in bright sun.
- Wind: Handles light-to-moderate wind well.
- Barometric pressure: Not very sensitive to pressure — feeding stays fairly steady regardless.

- Small spinners, feathers, or strings of jigs worked through the water column where bait schools are showing.
- Fish through the middle of the day in bright conditions — mackerel are a confident daytime surface feeder.

- Keep moving to relocate schools rather than waiting in one place for fish to arrive.
Spawning behavior
Mackerel typically spawn offshore in mild water in spring, arriving inshore in schools once water warms through summer. The spawn temperature window is roughly 52–58°F.
