Pollock Fishing Guide
A structure-loving predator found around wrecks, reefs, and kelp in cooler temperate waters, pollock (pollack) ambush prey in current around hard cover and generally feed hardest in low light.
Best conditions
- Water temperature: 52–64°F is the sweet spot.
- Light: Strongly prefers low light — dawn, dusk, overcast, or after dark.
- Wind: Handles light-to-moderate wind well.
- Barometric pressure: Not very sensitive to pressure — feeding stays fairly steady regardless.
Techniques & tips
- Jigs or lures worked through current around wrecks, reefs, and kelp edges.
- Fish dawn, dusk, or overcast conditions for the most consistent bite.
- Target moving water over structure — pollock feed far more actively on a running tide than at slack.
- Fish tight to structure rather than open water; pollock rarely stray far from cover.
Spawning behavior
Pollock typically spawn offshore in cold water in late winter, well before the inshore/structure season most anglers fish. The spawn temperature window is roughly 48–54°F.
