Rainbow trout are the most heat-tolerant and light-flexible of the three trout covered here, which is also why they're the most widely stocked trout in the country — they hold up better in put-and-take fisheries and warmer streams than brown or brook trout.
Best conditions
- Water temperature: 50–65°F is the sweet spot.
- Light: Flexible about light — active across a range of sky conditions.
- Wind: Handles light-to-moderate wind well.
- Barometric pressure: Moderately sensitive to pressure trends.
Techniques & tips
- Small spinners, flies, or bait fished on light line — rainbows in clear water are leader-shy like most trout.
- Fish stocked streams and tailwaters through a wider range of the day than brown or brook trout typically allow.
- Target riffles and current seams where drifting food concentrates.
- Move to deeper, cooler holes as water temperature climbs toward the top of their range.
Spawning behavior
Rainbow Trout typically spawn in spring as water temperature rises into the spawn range — later in the year, and in warmer water, than brown or brook trout's fall spawn. The spawn temperature window is roughly 50–55°F.
