Sheepshead Fishing Guide
A structure-loving bottom feeder found along the US Atlantic and Gulf coasts, sheepshead hold tight to pilings, jetties, and oyster bars and use distinctive human-like teeth to crush barnacles and crustaceans off hard structure.
Best conditions
- Water temperature: 62–75°F is the sweet spot.
- Light: Flexible about light — active across a range of sky conditions.
- Wind: Handles light-to-moderate wind well.
- Barometric pressure: Not very sensitive to pressure — feeding stays fairly steady regardless.
Techniques & tips
- Fiddler crabs, shrimp, or barnacles fished tight to pilings, docks, jetties, and oyster bars.
- Sheepshead bite well across a range of light conditions — structure matters more here than time of day.
- Fish light, precise bites — sheepshead are notorious for nibbling bait off the hook without a strong take.
- Target hard structure directly rather than open bottom; sheepshead rarely stray far from it.
Spawning behavior
Sheepshead typically spawn nearshore in late winter through spring in moderate water temperatures, gathering near passes and structure to do so. The spawn temperature window is roughly 60–68°F.
