Tench Fishing Guide
A warm-water bottom feeder found in still, weedy lakes and slow rivers across Europe, tench become sluggish and hard to tempt in cold water but feed steadily through summer, especially at dawn, dusk, and overnight.
Best conditions
- Water temperature: 68–78°F is the sweet spot.
- Light: Strongly prefers low light — dawn, dusk, overcast, or after dark.
- Wind: Prefers calm water — bites taper off quickly once wind picks up.
- Barometric pressure: Not very sensitive to pressure — feeding stays fairly steady regardless.
Techniques & tips
- Ledgered bait (worms, sweetcorn, pellets) fished hard on the bottom near weed beds and silty margins.
- Focus effort at dawn, dusk, or overnight — tench feed far more confidently in low light.
- Pick calm, sheltered swims — tench favor still water and go quiet once wind stirs things up.
- Warm summer water brings the most consistent activity; don't expect much from tench early or late in the season.
Spawning behavior
Tench typically spawn late, in the warmest part of the season, scattering eggs over dense weed growth once water holds reliably in range. The spawn temperature window is roughly 66–72°F.
