Zander Fishing Guide
Europe's answer to the walleye — same family, same overwhelming preference for low light — zander are typically found in big rivers and reservoirs across central and eastern Europe, in slightly warmer water than walleye favor.
Best conditions
- Water temperature: 59–72°F is the sweet spot.
- Light: Strongly prefers low light — dawn, dusk, overcast, or after dark.
- Wind: Handles light-to-moderate wind well.
- Barometric pressure: Moderately sensitive to pressure trends.
Techniques & tips
- Fish dawn, dusk, or after dark — zander are even more light-averse than walleye and often shut down completely in bright sun.
- Jigging soft plastics or livebaiting along drop-offs, channel edges, and structure.
- Target deeper water or shaded structure on bright days rather than waiting for evening.
- Slow, bottom-contact presentations outproduce fast retrieves.
Spawning behavior
Zander typically spawn later in spring than walleye, once water warms into a milder window, moving onto structure to guard eggs. The spawn temperature window is roughly 55–62°F.
